Silence and Solitude

My Nathan alarm clock wakes up reliably at 8:30 every morning, but sometimes I wake up before him for reasons I can’t always explain.  Sometimes it’s my husband’s cell phone ringing at an ungodly hour.  Today it’s allergies.  My brain kicks into gear and I’m done for—there’s no way I’m getting back to sleep.

Now that I’m vertical (it helps with the allergies) and drinking my first cup of coffee, I’m reveling in the moment.  It’s silent, except for the hum of the farmer’s tractor tilling the surrounding fields.  I’m sitting at my new favorite place to sit alone in the mornings, by the window in the dining room.  It's already beautiful out—soft morning light comes in and I can see the sunlight splashing on our towering pine tree, my favorite sweet gum tree and the enormous oak tree beyond.  And the best part: there are no demands on me.  I can just be.

Coffee tastes so much better when you can sip it slowly and actually enjoy it.  It won’t be long before my little Nathan wakes up and calls me from his crib—I look forward to seeing him, it feels like it’s been so long—but for now I’m enjoying the silence and solitude.  Maybe I’ll bring my coffee outside and watch for hummingbirds.

Hope you all have a beautiful day!

  1. Silence and solitude, yes. We all need that once in a while. You have a beautiful blog, I found you thru Tracey's blog Clover. I think we share the joy of knitting.

  4. 8:30? Oh my...I have envy on that timing. I try to get up at 5:30 to beat my kids who are up by 6:30. 7 is late for them. School starts at 8a. So why am I typing here at 11:30p? Off to bed but enjoying reading through your lovely blog!
